FA Trophy First Round Qualifying

Hopstats

Ground #806 and I am here for pragmatic travelling reasons today. I was heading further north until the M1 decided against it.

Context

These two teams are both going well in the Midland Division of the Northern Premier League – 6th vs 2nd. Even though the difference is four places, at this stage of the season that is just one point. However, it’s hard to know how high each club views the FA Trophy as a priority. There is a novelty value for Lichfield – this is their first Trophy game.

Match Report

You can always get a sense on arrival at a ground as to whether a club is “on the up” or in decline. Lichfield City are clearly in the first category. They are in their first season at Step 4 having achieved promotion from the Midland Football League last season. It’s a neat and tidy ground, next to a train line, with very good spectator facilities and an artificial surface, but get there very early if you want an onsite parking space!

The game overall was rather a disappointment, punctuated by frequent infringements. Corby took a lead in their first real attack when a looping deflection gave the home keeper no chance, just as I’d published the #keepertopcolourstats prediction of a home win. The teams then largely cancelled each other out and I got distracted by the retro design of the scruffy football itself. Some good defensive shadowing delayed a Lichfield shot before the rebound was netted but correctly disallowed for offside. That was the nearest to an equaliser in that first half.

They came close again on 55 minutes with a shot that just passed the post but arguably Corby had even better chances from corners, one of which needed a last-ditch clearance near the goalline. Lichfield were struggling to create really clear openings and it was Corby who should have doubled their lead after 76 minutes, but the attacker stumbled for some reason. However, with ten minutes to go they did score again, and it was a good job too because Lichfield got a late consolation goal from the penalty spot with very little time left.

I guess Corby will be happy with a cup win on the road, and Lichfield will be disappointed not to have done themselves justice in the attacking third.

So What?

Cliché alert : Corby go into the hat for the next round and Lichfield can concentrate on the league.

Goalkeeper Top Colour Stats Update

The background to this, and the latest keeper top colour league table, is here on this dedicated page.

Today Pink takes on Yellow, and the away win is enough to shift Yellow off the bottom of the colour table simply because of the number of games seen. The table also includes the result from an unblogged game last night as I was at Stamford Bridge to see Chelsea 2 Manchester City 1 in the Womens’ Super League. Grey beat Pink. 337 games altogether now in the sample. The photo shows the moment that Yellow's clean sheet was denied by Lichfield's consolation penalty.

Hopstats

#804 on the lifetime list. Here because I am in the area for the Bank Holiday weekend.

Context

A local PO-postcode derby for the Bank Holiday Monday. AFC Portchester are up in Step 4 after promotion as champions from the Wessex League last season. They have three points from three league matches (one win). Moneyfields have a win and a draw, so four points. Two days ago Portchy lost at Bedfont Sports and Moneyfields shared the points in a 4-4 draw with Hayes & Yeading United.

Match Report

Before I forget, be warned that the car parking amount charged by the PayByPhone app was significantly more than the amount implied on the notice boards. If you go hopping here (well worth it) take plenty of change, and go early if you want to park near the ground. It's an interesting arena and the club made a lot of effort to look after a Bank Holiday crowd. You can imagine how the facilities have grown step-by-step as the club moved up through the pyramid.

This was a game of two halves. The home team scored all four goals before the interval and the points were in the proverbial bag. The opening goal after five minutes was a gift from the visiting defence after the ball was lost in an attempt to play out from the back in the modern way.  Alfie Stanley rolled the ball into the unguarded net. The second came from number 11 after 11 minutes. Zak Willett found himself in lots of space, he cut back inside the approaching defender, and the pic below shows him shaping to place the ball in the far corner.

The third was pinged in from 45 metres or so (you get proper physics units in this blog) by Stanley who picked up the ball in midfield and had spotted the keeper off his line. The fourth was arguably the best of the lot, thrashed from the left into the far corner by Ryan Wilkins. So, 4-0 at half-time.

I moved to the stand on the opposite side in search of shade for the second half, with temperatures around 303K (that's the Kelvin scale of absolute temperature right there) which is more commonly known in this country as 30 degrees C. Maybe because of the temperature, maybe because the demolition job was already done, but the second half was anticlimactic. Moneyfields never gave up and were allowed plenty of possession, but they had only really created one decent chance before the 75-minute mark. Portchester didn't look too concerned once they had weathered the first ten minutes or so of the second half.

For me at the final whistle, it was a race back to the Yappmobile for what turned out to be a tortuous return journey around the dreaded M25 western section. Good day though, decent entertainment for the passing neutral and plenty of other culture, history, scenery and interest in the general area. Recommended if not already ticked!

So What?

The clubs end the day in 6th and 18th place.

Pre-match Entertainment

A circuit of Portchester Castle, watching oystercatchers feeding on the mud flats, a stroll along part of the English coastal path (and, I suspect, disturbing a couple in flagrante behind a tree), looking across towards Portsmouth, and stopping for an ice-cream at the nearby Salt Café. Insert your own joke about Portchester's defence looking solid.

Hopstats

#802 on the lifetime list

Context

The kindest way to describe the Students’ start to the season is to say that they are undefeated at home – with one point from three games. Carlton have two league wins and a big FA Cup victory on their list already. The visitors will start as favourites.

Match Report

This is an extremely impressive facility, set within a large university campus. The site is also hosting two international tournaments for teams of men and women with cerebral palsy, so there was a lot going on in and around the central stadium. There is unlikely to be a main stand and playing surface better than this anywhere else at Step 4 in the country. I made the most of a rare opportunity to sit a few metres above ground level, whereas many of the Carlton faithful kept to their habit of installing themselves and their flags behind the home goalkeeper, including of course the half-time change-of-ends.

Carlton showed their status as favourites early on with a pressing game to disrupt the students playing out from the back. They made the first few half-chances but the Students couldn’t take the best one of the game so far after 11 minutes. They soon went behind to an old-school corner, with the big number five Dean Freeman winning the ball in the air, and his textbook downward header found the back of the net with the help of a deflection. My photo seems to show a bit of streetwise shirt-pulling in the process.

At half-time there was only one goal in it and the home side could not be discounted. There had been some lovely one- and two-touch approach play from both sides. The student defenders caught the eye, but probably because they had been the busiest players on the field. They always looked just a bit more anxious and stretched than their comfortable Carlton counterparts. Insert your own “degrees of freedom” joke here. I wrote a note to myself that “Carlton will need a second”, and went for a Mars Bar (also a second).

That game-settling goal duly arrived after 66 minutes with a volley from striker Ashley Chambers, and then the third was an absolute screamer from wide on the left flank from Niall Davie. Great goal, ten minutes to go. To their credit, young heads did not drop and the Students almost got a consolation in the dying moments, but this was a fair result in an enjoyable game for this passing neutral. The day ended with a dreadful journey back south down the M1 “thanks” to a series of roadworks. Good job it wasn’t a school night.

So What?

The early league table has Carlton top, ahead of Corby on goal difference after three wins out of three games. Loughborough’s earlier point keeps them one place off the bottom.

Competition

Southern League Division One South (Step 4)

Hopstats

Ground 799 on the lifetime list. I’ve chosen this game because it is the only one at an unvisited Step 4 ground today where the result seriously matters to one of the sides.

Context

Melksham are safe in upper mid-table and whatever happens will finish 8th. Mousehole need a win, and possibly a big one. They start the day in the final playoff position, but are level on points with Exmouth, who are away at Larkhall. There is a favourable goal difference of +2 in Mousehole’s favour. Larkhall have only just escaped relegation themselves so Exmouth will be expected to win. A draw will do for Mousehole only if Exmouth draw too (or lose). If Exmouth win, Mousehole must win too with only a one goal difference at most in the margin of victory. I suppose they could both lose, but that is very unlikely.

Match Report

Melksham quickly showed that they were not going to roll over. They fashioned the first real chance with a driven ball across the six-yard box from their right, and an inrushing attacker was only inches away from converting. It was end to end, but no great surprise when Melksham did take the lead. A cross flicked the head of a defender and left Jake Andrews in space for a far-post tap-in. The referee checked with his assistant before confirming the goal, silencing the visitors’ considerable protests claiming offside. The assistant would go on to get plenty of abuse from the visiting fans as the game went on.

The game continued to be competitive and entertaining. At half-time, the internet coughed up the fact that Exmouth were already two up at Larkhall so even two goals for Mousehole might not be enough. The second half started in the same vein, and Mousehole got their equaliser after 56 minutes. A low shot from Josh Bernard nestled in the corner to restore some hope. However, within a few minutes Exmouth had doubled their lead at Larkhall and it looked like the Mousehole playoff chances would need a hatful of late goals.

There were indeed two late goals, but the first went to Melksham with four minutes to go, scored by substitute Louis Millard. The best goal of the day went to Mousehole’s Jack Symons with a cracking volley in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Well done to both sides for their part in a very decent end-of-season game, and commiserations in particular to the Cornish visitors. In the final analysis, a run of only one win in the last five games was not quite enough.

So What?

Both teams will start next season in the same division – it is unlikely that either will be subject to any geographical switching. The divisional playoff semi-finals are in midweek.

Numbers 797 & 798 respectively on my lifetime list and I’m here for a chance to tick off a Step 4 priority whilst kickoff times and proximity allow a Bank Holiday double hop.

Context

Penultimate league games of the season for all four teams today. Hassocks have already secured the divisional title and will grace Step 4 with their picturesque ground next season. Haywards Heath slipped to fourth earlier in the weekend but are still in the playoff positions. Both Broadbridge Heath and Littlehampton Town are safe in mid- and lower-mid table respectively so there is not much riding on the fixture except local bragging rights.

Match Reports

Haywards Heath lined up for the traditional guard of honour for the champions-elect. They held on for just over half an hour before going behind in a moment of controversy. I was at the other end so need to be somewhat vague, but it looked as if Dan Turner’s header from a ridiculous distance went in on the bounce, but with the visiting keeper Mitch Bromage flattened and in need of subsequent treatment. Turner himself had taken the long throw that caused the initial chaos. Long and looping far post corners, alongside the long-throw weapon, meant that the aerial routes were well-used in home attacks. It had been a very physical first half, with Hassocks generally on top before Heath’s first real chance on the break as we entered stoppage time.

The visitors could and should have equalised just after the hour. It took an outstanding double block by keeper James Shaw then defender Joe Bull to keep the lead. Then an attempt to play out from the back went wrong and Hassocks doubled their lead. Josh Mundy was set up beautifully for a spectacular first-time strike. Substitute Rauri Farrell got the third in similar circumstances, and another sub Charlie Pitcher was denied twice in quick succession as the Haywards Heath challenge subsided.

I had to skip the trophy presentation formalities to head north to Broadbridge Heath. I often lurk with visiting supporters when I am a neutral, but the tuneless megaphone-assisted “singing” from the Littlehampton end meant that my loyalties switched sharpishly. Both sides threatened. Littlehampton were more direct, but Broadbridge reached the byline more than once down the flanks without creating a finish.

The floodgates opened on 27 minutes with a Mark Goldson penalty. Littlehampton responded with a good spell of pressure but then Goldson got a second with a clever turn and shot. An intelligent pass led to a third, for Mason Doughty, before the interval and that was pretty much all doubt removed about the result.

The fourth goal was a peach. Matt Hay’s right-wing cross at the end of a run (maybe more stepovers than strictly necessary, but enough to bamboozle the defence) was converted with a textbook diving header by Louis Evans. The last half-hour was largely uneventful, but that was a very effective demolition job by the home side.

A nice Bank Holiday double hop, despite the joylessness of the M25 western section on the way home.

So What?

Farewell to Step 5 for Hassocks. Haywards Heath will still need to get something from their final game in order to secure that playoff space. They could finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th. Littlehampton Town will finish 18th no matter what happens next weekend, and Broadbridge will finish between 11th and 14th.
